In Voyager 2, players are tasked with launching the Voyager space probes on an extensive exploration of the Solar System. The objective involves meticulously plotting a trajectory that allows for the closest possible approach to various celestial bodies without risk of collision, thereby achieving optimal flybys. Successfully gathering data not only contributes to scientific knowledge but also unlocks a Golden Record—a visual replay of the probe's actual flight path.

The gameplay extends beyond initial flybys as players utilize gravitational assists to navigate towards remote planets. The mechanics involve pilot landers designed to touch down on alien surfaces and a careful management of ∆v (delta-v) to successfully insert satellites into orbit, all while striving to construct a comprehensive deep space communication network. Additionally, players must find efficient ways to transmit their findings back to Earth before they are potentially lost in the vastness of space.
